Are Liverpool FC cynically exploiting the Hillsborough 96?

It is a horrible question to ask, but it is provoked by Ian Ayre's disgraceful attempts to vindicate the decision to retain the services of Suarez and the all too convenient request of Suarez that his fine be paid to the Hillsborough Families Support Group.

Does anybody really believe that this was Suarez's idea? Does anybody really believe Suarez cares about the victims of Hillsborough?

Some PR prat has suggested this as a way of mitigating the revulsion even Liverpool fans must feel for Suarez after his latest act of depravity. But if the fans swallow this, then they will be demeaning the memory of the Hillsborough victims themselves. Margaret Aspinall clearly has reservations given her statement that, "It is a nice gesture but it is a terrible thing under the circumstances".

What is terrible is the cynical way that Liverpool Football Club are seemingly seeking to exploit the dead. How convenient that within seven days of Thatcher's death this "gesture" should be made. It's no gesture, there's no sincerity involved, it is rancid cynicism and the club should be ashamed.

If Suarez really cares about the victims, let's see him pledge 50% of his salary throughout the remainder of his 4 year contract. 40% of that would go in tax anyway, so why not prove how much he really cares?

He won't of course.  Why would he? He has no affection for Liverpool and no affection for the people of Liverpool. He is just a spoilt little shit with all the self control of a three year old.

What is desperately sad, however, is the depths that this once proud club is now prepared to plumb in its attempts to recover past glories. Should Juventus and Liverpool ever meet again, they could bill the game, "The Old Lady of Football versus The Shameless Whore."

  5. If you care so much why don't you donate 50% off your money to the fund you troll, The fact that you brought this up should make LFC fans more ashamed of you than LS

  6. Why use THATCHER'S name in the same breath as Liverpool Football club and especially in light of her involvement in the Hillsborough cover up !!!!!!

    1. Erm, because Thatcher was involved in the cover up. That has to be one of the most stupid questions ever asked!

  7. Never normally respond to articles on the internet but this is horrific. I didn't even get half way down. Do you have any idea how offended families of the Hillsborough victims will be reading this? Would Liverpool really fine Suarez and then put the money in their back pocket? No, they have done the decent thing and donated the better part of 200K to the cause. There is no right way to deal with what happened, but at least the support group has some additional funds. You talk about the depths football clubs go to recover past glories, but after studying for a degree in journalism, it never ceases to amaze me the depths online journos will go to get noticed.

    1. Do Liverpool normally donate fines to the HFSG? Nope.

  8. This is a despicable vitriolic article. You should be ashamed of yourself. Im shocked and appalled that such an article would even be published or allowed to exist considering your affiliations.

  9. What a thoroughly ill-conceived piece.

Last week was Hillsborough anniversary week.

Sunday's game started with a minute's applause to mark the passing of an esteemed Hillsborough justice campaigner.

Suarez had drawn additional criticism for the timing of his bad behaviour.

Therefore, all things considered, wasn't it entirely appropriate that he should donate his fine to a Hillsborough cause?

As for Margarent Aspinall, if she thought Liverpool were trying to exploit the 96, she and the HSFG wouldn't have accepted the donation. Mrs Aspinall naturally expressed reservations about the circumstances but not the motive.

You've made yourself look a bit silly here.

    1. Did the Liverpool players donate their salaries last week? Or even 10% of their salaries? Did Suarez cough up any money before biting off more than he could chew? Of course not. It is ugly I know, I say so in my opening sentence, but be honest, this is a PR exercise and nothing more. And as such, it is deeply, deeply cynical.

    2. And with regard to Ms Aspinall, she is in an impossible position. She cannot decline money the families may need and she dare not risk the ire of Liverpool fans who knee jerk before they think.

  10. It pains me to admit this but I thought much the same thing when I heard about the donation.

  11. What else should they do with it, keep it? lose lose situation with bellends like you around.

  12. Fines are often donated to charity. In the past the club has supported KD's charity. The club has clearly supported the families of the 96 for many years. Its the obvious charity to support this month unless you think a donation to mrs Thatcher would be more helpful. What I dont get is why you feel the need to comment about a club Im sure you know little about.

  13. Poor article, no attempt at a solid argument whatsoever, just an excuse to throw insults at a club & player you evidently don't like.
