Manchester United's Ferguson Compared to Leeds Legend Don Revie - What a joke!

Well I've heard everything now. According to that other great Leeds Legend, Brendan Ormsby, Sir Alex Ferguson is "in the same bracket as Don Revie".

Oh yeah, in the sense that if both dressed up in frocks and had a sing song at the piano, they might pass as Hinge and Bracket perhaps? Because their record as managers stands no comparison.

How many European Cups did Revie win exactly? How many titles? How many cups? The answer would be 0, 2 and 5 counting the Inter Cities Fairs Cup and the Cup Winners Cup. Now how does that compare with Ferguson? Well the figures there would read 2, 13 and 10 if we ignore things like the Charity Shield and the World Club Cup.And that's just his record at Manchester United!

Same bracket? It's a different bloody universe!

If you want somebody in the same bracket with Revie, you might cite Clough, but of course he did win two European Cups more than the Don and his overall record is better than Revie's with his stats reading, 2, 2 & 4. And, of course, he did it with two clubs, not one!

Ormsby, of course, dare not mention Brian in the same sentence as Revie and is courting the favour of Leeds fans when he draws the ridiculous comparison between Ferguson and Revie. On that basis, Ormsby is on a par with Giles, Bremner, Hunter, Gray, Cooper, Varney and Lorimer!

  1. I'm a life-long Leeds fan and I can't fail to agree with you on this one. I found the article headline so ridiculous that I never even read the article itself. I take nothing away from what Don Revie achieved at Leeds, and I dislike Ferguson's arrogance, but if there ever was a man who deserved his ego it is Fergie, not Revie.

  2. How many cups or trophies have all your managers won together. Or are you just Chelsea's noisy neighbours. Who believe you are a big club for getting a move to that terrible olympic stadium.

You are still a tinpot club in the eyes of everyone else

  3. how can you put varney in with the likes of Peter Lorimer, Billy Bremner, Johnny Giles, Eddie Gray and Norman Hunter.... these are true legends and it is ridiculous for people to say otherwise

    4. Clearly calling you a troll hits a nerve, but I'm afraid that is what you are. This blog is all about you and the attention you crave. The fact that you keep inciting increasing levels of personal abuse directed towards yourself suggests some deeply worrying personality disorders.

    5. I've just looked up the definition of "troll". The common denominator seems to be anonynimity. Usually trolls are too embarrassed by their trolling to make their real identity known. By hiding behind anonymity trolls, whilst showing themselves up, can remain in denial of their issues. I don't know what made anyone think HF is a troll!

  4. Revie built a relegation-threatened, Division Two side into a European powerhouse purely on youthful recruitment. Some would argue that takes better managerial skills than to go out and spend £30 million on a centre half and £30 million on a striker to win the league.

I think you missed Ormsby's point, Hammersfan.

He is saying that both Ferguson and Revie belong in the bracket of Britain's finest managers, he wasn't comparing records....

But then again, you always see the negative side of things don't you.

  7. Revie pushed his players too far, which was their undoing, think he would have won a European cup if they had won the league in 71 or 72, Leeds at their best were better than Ajax in my opinion

The riguors of management of the era the likes of Shankly, Nicholson, Revie etc managed in, it was far more difficult and the football landscape was far more competitive, much harder to win the title. They couldn't just sign Van Persie or Torres

  12. In the era Revie managed in Clough didn’t win a European cup either, he lost in the semi final to Juventus, in that season he also finished 8th in the league(Revie never finished outside top four) and was thumped 5-0 by Revies Leeds. Revie’s best showing in the European cup was the semi final in 1970, but that only tells half the story, leeds had been chasing the title against a top class Everton side, and chasing the fa cup, after a marathon three legged semi final against Manchester Utd, Best, Charlton et al, and then had just outclassed a very good Chelsea side in the final but for a blackpool beach pitch and Sprake allowing the ball to roll under his body would have won. So Leeds lost the match against Celtic, but only under the most trying circumstances after playing something like 9 games in 20 days, in an era without substitutions. Clough won it later on when it was basically a free for all for any well orginised English clubs, to the point that his final opponent was Malmo, and even Aston Villa won one! In 1975 semi final Leeds beat a Barcelona side that had won the league with a record number of points, was managed by rinus michels and continaed the likes of Cryuff and Neeskins. In the final Leeds faced the defending champions Bayern Munich captained by Beckenbaur! And Leeds still dominated, and scored what would have been the winning goal without some peculier officiating. So Revie created a side that could outclass the best in Europe during an era littered with great players and great teams, out of a club that a decade previously had been the equivalent of Hull City!

  16. There is no way, NO WAY can Ferguson be compared to the Don. Revie did not have millions of $$ to spend - He built Leeds United from nothing to the best football team the world has ever seen. Leeds should have won more cups but were a victims of their own success and crooked match officials.
Ferguson is not fit to clean the Dons underpants.

  18. I'm a Leeds fan and I agree.. ridicuous article and Ormsby is a waste of newsprint. Altough Alex Ferguson is clearly streets ahead on trophies, I would say that Revie in some ways outperformed Fergie adn he completely transformed an 'also-ran' club wih no honours at all, into a world-famous side, one which Leeds have hardly come close to emulating in the years since.

    ReplyDelete
  19. What many of you guys seem to be overlooking is that Ferguson took over a club in the doldrums at a time when Liverpool were dominating the game. Ferguson then brought through a team that Hansen dismissed with that infamous "You win nothing with kids" comment. Sure he has spent big but he has also sold big too. How much did he buy Ronaldo for and what did he sell him for? How much did he pay for Tevez and what did he sell him for?

Yes Revie deserves huge credit for the way he built that Leeds team but Ferguson is a winner and Revie wasn't. Leeds specialized in blowing it and finishing second didn't they? Yes there were excuses - that West Brom goal - but could you see a Ferguson team losing to Sunderland in the Cup Final, or a Ferguson team losing to Colchester United, or a Ferguson team blowing an ten point lead in the race for the title (3 wins and a draw equivalent)? Of course not.

Revie developed a persecution complex within the team, squad and City. And when the pressure mounted, Leeds cracked more often than not.

    1. I'm not trying to have an argument who was a better manager, there is clearly no doubt Ferguson will go down as the greatest in history of the game, certainly in terms of success. However comparing managers of different eras is foolish, the things they had to deal with were far different. The myth of Leeds 'blowing it' was another thing invented by the acerbic press, like 'dirty leeds'. if Revie wasn't a winner, Leeds could not have come back season after season, he had an iron will to win, which rubbed off on his players. The thing your forgetting in that era there wasn't substsitutions or big squads. Ferguson for example may have lost his job a thousand times without squad rotation and substitutions. The treble was won with substitutions. Revie could not change the Sunderland match with magic subs, and by that point his team was dead physically anyway. Watch the Leeds-Wolves semi final of that year, half the Leeds players pull up with cramp. From the frist minute of the 73 final, Leeds were dead on their feet physically. When Revie singled out trophies(which is what he should have done more often) Leeds won with flying colours, the 69 title- best record of the 20th century, 74 title- 29 matches unbeaten start, which remained unbettered until Arsenal 04. And Ferguson had many humiliations, losing 3-0 to York at old Traffod, and losing to Leeds in 2010 at Old Trafford, Revie's teams specialised in come backs, and winning attitude which is why he had such a great record over that period. To say Revie wasn't a winner, you don't understand him much, no team won as much as Leeds in that period or had the same record. Yes Revie made mistakes and had faults, but so does Ferguson. The idea of a 'persecution complex', is what gave Leeds strength, and is exactly what Ferguson uses himself, it is what every great manager uses, from Mourinho to Clough

    1. Revie managed Leeds for 13 years taking them from near the bottom of the old Second division to the top with little money. Ferguson managed Man U for 27 years taking over when they were near the top of the first tier and he was given plenty of time and money.

If Revie had managed Leeds for another 14 years you might be able to compare records fairly. Would Hammersfan have bet against him winning more trophies?

And on the subject of Colchester, Man U went out of the F A Cup at home to third tier Leeds.

  25. As if you are the fountain of knowledge when it comes to Revie

One thing changed in 92, MONEY came into the game, playing into the hands of the big businesses...Manure etc
how many varied winners since that day?
Only two billionaire clubs now compete....
how predictable has the PL become?

What was the difference this year in the PL?
everyone agrees it was RVP............£24 million
The only thing that talks now is MONEY

Paisley was the greatest ever, won european cups when Liverpool were champions.....won leagues when they were always ultra competitive...
and liverpool fans.........salt of the earth...
remember them cheering the Leeds team when they won the title at Anfield and singing Champions.......true fans, great club.

  29. Leeds United were Top side in Europe between 1966 and 1972 and had the highest UEFA european coefficient with a 100% british team that cost feck all and all became household names and never got the recognition for the 2 trophies robbed for Match corruption in 1973 and 1975.Manure never dominated Europe and only dominated domestically and generally underachieved in Europe.

  30. Good blogg HF...

I don't think you can compare Managers from a different era when the game has changed so much, I haven't read Ormsbys article so I'm not sure whether you have taken his quote out of context. What Fergie has achieved is outstanding in terms of titles and trophies won, in fact having the ability to manage millionaires with massive egos also deserves respect, even from Leeds fans. Revie never got the respect or credt for what he achieved at Leeds, his model of making sure the young players got an education and were made to feel part of the family or his attention to detail before every game creating one of the best teams of that era were over shadowed with what happened when he took the England job. The great Leeds team were branded as cynical and dirty but anyone fortunate to be around back then knows they were much much more, its true that we had players that could and did dish it out but then again when football was a game played by men (not the over paid actors we watch now) every team had their hardmen.
The great Leeds United team finished more often than not as brides maids and the history books will show that we never achieved our full potential but to Leeds fans young and old Don Revie will always be regarded as a god.

  33. I am posting this comment not in reply to the peurile hammer frauds attempt to wind up his betters, but to add a few points to what has been said. I agree with most comments on here particularly 12:08. I grew up during the 70s and the playing field was level for most 1st division clubs(although the pitches weren't). If anyone cares to look at league tables you will indeed see that ten teams could be vying for 1st place. Leeds,Everton,Derby,Arsenal,Liverpool,Forest of course all won it,but teams like Ipswich,Qpr,Man City were all thereabouts. Remember that managers like Revie,Shankley,Clough,Mee and Nicholson only had ONE subsitute also and not half a team they could bring on to change a game. Most clubs relied on their youth systems or astute scouting although man u were still using the "buy a house for the parents system" to attract young players. What Revie,Shankley and Clough(twice) did was remarkable, grabbing 4 clubs by the scruff of the neck and achieving what they did. Fergie and bskyb aren't even close anbd all this crap about them being in the "doldrums"? Er It was all there for fergie, Robson,Strachan,Mcgrath etc. Apparently if a monkey sat at a keypad long enough(hf anyone?) it would eventually type out the works of shakespeare and if you give a monkey the "man u" job and a shit load of money it'll eventually win trophies,( atkinson, ferguson).

  34. MU's cash and debt have funded Fergusons multi million pound transfer fees and cash to bribe the best youngstrers. Revie did it on a shoe string from a position where LU were on the verge of being relegated to the third division. Get your comments to match the facts. I guess even Big Sam could do something other than mediocrity with WHU if he had access to MU resources.
