Do the people of Leeds deserve a good team?

What was the average gate at Elland Road last season? Somewhere around 18,000 in a stadium with a capacity of 39,000? Shocking.

Of course, those looking for excuses blame Bates, Warnock and extortionate prices. So what happened when GFH Capital came in, Warnock was sacked and prices were slashed? The stadium remained half empty!

Now the nation has been embarrassed by appallingly poor attendances at Headingly for the test match with New Zealand. The Ashes battles at Lords and the Oval were sold out ages ago - I have my ticket for the Saturday at Lords - but there were wide open spaces on the terraces at Headingly yesterday and the crowd is even smaller today, despite the tight Tykes reducing prices for kids to a fiver.

Shame on the Mums and Dads of Leeds! Every child in the city should be at the ground today enjoying a day of international sport, especially given the success of Bairstow and Root, both of whom have batted today.

Don't give me crap about cricket being boring, only if you lack the mental capacity to understand the game. Who knows, there could be a kid hanging around with glue sniffing mates on a Leeds estate today who might have had a career in international sport had their parents been as responsible as Joe Root's!

We have precious few opportunities to witness great sportsmen "in the flesh". I am lucky enough to have seen Moore, Hurst, Peters, Giles, Eddie Gray, Brooking, Tevez, Lampard, Sobers, Warne, Tendulkar, Dravid, Boycott, Waugh, Lara, McGrath, Botham, Gooch, Gower, Cook and many, many others thanks to my Dad engendering a passion for sport in me at a young age. If Leeds can't muster a full house for a bank holiday test featuring two young home grown stars, you have to wonder if the city deserves to host test matches or a Premiership football team.

  5. Yes I feel so ashamed about taking my wife and kids to Lanzarote tomorrow, instead of being bored shitless watching cricket, so fuck off and don't go telling honest working Leeds supporters like myself what we should be doing at half term.

  6. Cricket what's that?

  7. As usual, there is a glaring hole in your argument. The population of London is (approximately) 10 times that of Leeds. That's the equivalent of an 80,000 attendance at Lords. The good people of Leeds therefore support the England cricket team 3 times better than the Londoners do. You're not too good at maths we know but even by your standards...............

As for Leeds United, 10 years in the doldrums has taken it's toll on attendances but, with the support of the new owners, expect 30,000 plus crowds to return more regularly next season.

    Jog on Dildo Baggins!

  8. Ticket at lords !!!! Lol ha ha ha , that's the biggest laugh I've had all weekend , you pathetic little man..... You don't go out Neville ....

  9. You are mentaly disabled if you are comparing an ashes test match to a friendly against New Zeland! Thats like comparing a friendly at football to a world cup game. You are proper thick as for the comment about the gate in league 1 we had average gate of 24000 and thats league 1!!!!! We wantes bates n warnock out and the route one football we were playing was a joke so we wanted to make our voices heard. Just like you guys when u were booing your own manager even though u were in the top 3 in championship.

I used to think you were quiet funny now i just think yout a p rick picking fights for no reason and the best bit is ure points are a joke!!!!!!! New Zeland same as ashes hahahaha what a w anker

Having grown up in the leafy tranquil beautiful suburbs of north Leeds it is crystal clear that you have never visited our wonderful city HF.Getting off at the train station and travelling by bus the short trip to Elland road doesn,t count i,m afraid.Your obvious jealousy and insecurity are not positive character traits. I had the misfortune to live in Stratford,an absolute toilet of a place,as is the whole of the east end for a couple of months while my upper street Islington apartment was being refurbished. Still smarting from We All Love Leeds accurate description i suppose.Your attempt at i,m not sure what really shows you to be a childish fool. I gave you more credit than that. Hope i wasn,t mistaken.

  14. You write some crap HF!!!Cricket fans from all over the country goto test matches regardless of where the game is staged, so if your going to blame the people of leeds for that when yccc have a massive membership throughout the county then its pathetic!!!As for lufc, my advice would be stop selling the best players at the club and replacing them with very average fodder! It shows no ambition!so lethargy and dis-interest sets in with the supporters!Leeds fans would pay top prices for decent football!but we just ain't gettin it!!

  15. Why do you think that anyone cares about your point of view? Do you fly "home" every other Saturday to ensure that upton park is full? Worry about your own back yard before you start spouting off about a team and place you know nothing about.

The gates have been poor..... So was the football. Why would you pay to watch an ugly game? Coz that's what it's been!! Damn ugly. I'm a season ticket holder, so I had no choice but to go. I had to endure the worst season "ever!!!!!" You can't blame the people of leeds for staying away. Roll on next season when I know we will play attractive footie and the gates will start to rise!! So yes we do deserve a good team. It's not our Devine rite, but surely it's about time!! Isn't it???????
    And yeah, cricket.....zzzzzzzzzzzzz

  18. you sir are single handely disrespecting your club by leaving no choice for all fans of the white rose... We used to admire West Ham. Not least because they could never really challenge us. Also because West Ham are/were a proper club. Enjoy your 15 minutes leeching hits off a big club and enjoy moving to the souless arena which is the Olympic stadium. You're a dick. 29. HF, I agree with some of your posts but I am struggling to understand this one! are you relating the attendances at ER to the cricket at Headingley? Don't forget the Rhinos were playing Wigan yesterday and I'm sure there were one or two more at that game than the London v Catalans game!! My point - if your having a dig at Leeds United, stick to the football.

  36. Get your facts right average attendance over 29 gaqmes last season at Elland Road 20650. Some Premier League and most Championship teams would wish at least the same crowds. Point Two: If you weren't one of them so called glue sniffers what happened to your fledgling international sports career?

  42. Paying to watch a match which has a long and prelong inevitable win is hard to do. And I'd like to make a point about manchester citys last game of the season vs norwich. Empty seats were like pigeons in trafalgar square.I worked at liverpool fc this season and they did not sell all of their tickets for europa games. People pay to see the best and that is what will attract the most crowds. Its not a problem in Leeds its a problem in the U.K and sport.

    ReplyDelete
  43. key point there, the 'ashes' battles. If the Ashes were held at Headingley, they would sell out. You aren't going to sell out a match against New zealand cricket in a million years

  50. Only saying what the commentators on Sky said and the anger is because I have touched a nerve. Headingly should be sold out for a test and Leeds should be averaging gates close to 30,000 in the second tier of English football. The people of the city seem to have fallen out of love with sport, sadly.

ALSO why haven't you bought a ticket yourself? If people like you bought a ticket and turned up instead of slagging others off there wouldn't b a attendance problem would there spam dangler!!.

I went to the YB40 at Headingley this Sunday, there was more people there than the England game.
Plus,Leeds has had low attendances this year, probably due to there being a boycott for half the season? Take a look at the averages from the times Leeds have been in out the prem, even when in League 1 they averaged more than all of League 1 and the Championship.
Like West Ham, Leeds have fantastic away support, best away average in the Championship even with all their restrictions. They infact have better away fans than West Ham IMO.

(A West Ham fan who still can't get his head round how much everyone hates Leeds, sounds like jealousy to me)
