Leeds continue to climb despite home draw with Barnsley

Well, who would have thought a goal less home draw against Barnsley would be enough to see Leeds climb another place in the table? It is just further evidence that the Leeds United McFeel Good Factor Sleeper Express to the Premiership, Europe, Champions League, Infinity and Beyond has got up such a head of steam that it is pretty damn unstoppable at the moment.

Of course, come the end of the season, fans may look back on this game as a terrible missed opportunity. True derbies are unpredictable affairs, but a team chasing promotion really should be burying a club like Barnsley, especially when the relegation strugglers are reduced to ten men and the officials introduce Fergie Time in order to help the home team win. But 14 minutes in total against the ten man Tykes was not enough.

And it's not as if Leeds were especially unlucky. The stats reveal that both sides had 11 shots on goal whilst Barnsley saw marginally more of the ball over the 90 minutes.

But no matter, Leeds have climbed a place courtesy of the stumbles of others. Mind you, Derby are looking a bit tasty under the Wally with the Brolly so the problem with today's draw is that Leeds have fallen further adrift of the automatic promotion places courtesy of wins for Burnley, Leicester and the Rams.

The big plus? The gate of 31,000 plus on the last Saturday before Christmas. There must have been a lot of wives fuming!

  6. ...'Leeds have fallen further adrift of the automatic promotion places courtesy of wins for Burnley, Leicester and the Rams...'
Explain how being 9 points off 2nd at the start of the day and now being 8 points off 2nd amounts to falling further adrift of Auto promotion ??
I know those three teams you name won, meaning they are closer to the top 2 now than Leeds, however in the chase for 2nd place, Leeds gained.
You're a bit of an odd ball...

    1. Very easy to explain, if you think it through. Three teams chasing automatic promotion picked up three points whilst Leeds only picked up one. Only two of those need to finish above Leeds for Leeds to miss out. Understand?

    2. No Sir, you thinking is flawed. The Top two is a fixed commodity, not floating. The progress Leeds made is because they gained points on the 2nd team in the competition. This cannot be defined as losing ground. Others made more ground, yes, and these others may well represent 1st or 2nd spot at some stage, so Leeds missed out on getting closer to Auto promotion, but they still advanced because 2nd spot stayed static. This cannot be falling adrift. Think it through.

  9. Another game undefeated, I really dont get you one little bit.
I don't understand why you write about us and slag us off 99% of the time so much, I would say fair enough if you supported a club that are amazing and are a genuine English top club that are going places, But the truth is your not and never will, Well apart from the going places bit as you are definitely going places my friend. The new den, The amex stadium, Huish park, Hillsborough, The Reebok just a few to mention. Happy travelling up to Middlesbrough on a wet winters evening when you're sat 19th in the table.

  10. It's a pity we didn't win and go three points clear of 7th with a good goal differential.

    1. Yeah, with a tough game on 26th a wee bit more of a comfort zone would have been nice. Just hope we get stuck right into Blackpool.

  14. Erm... were Leeds not 6th in the table yesterday morning and 6th in the table today? Expect BMD to strengthen squad in January. Promotion will happen next season, if not this one. If the latter we will miss not beating West Ham, as they will be relegated (again).

    1. Erm Leeds are now fifth. If you want to correct me, try to get your facts right. By the way, it is Christmas in 3 days time, not Easter!

  15. "Now listen here Paddy" (12.39) To be sure if you divide 30 by 6 we got 5 and dats where we are! I tought your lot built the Leeds-Liverpool canal! and in some places tis 6 yards wide and others 5 yards wide...the 5 yard part twas always built in the afternoon...see "the point" is a valuable one , as we climb from 6th to 5th!..Merry Xmas!!

  16. As I stated at the start of the season, any team averaging 5pts per 3 matches is guaranteed a playoff place. Leeds are just below that average and are currently 5th! 21 divide by 3 x 5= 35

  17. Might have expected a bit of racism from a Hammers fan. Comes with the territory.

I didn't realise our goal difference was better than Reading's - simple as. No need to slag me off because of my nationality. Look forward to Leeds being promoted and West Ham demoted.

    1. I don't think Jack supports West Ham. Just like Hyde didn't practice medicine!

  18. Whatever. More pertinently for you (and Jack), you're four points from the bottom berth. Cor blimey loveaduck.

  19. Awfully sorry there Gombeen Nation, I didn't realise you would take it as being offensive/racist my father is actually from Mayo and I call him Paddy all the time, just a bit of craich! I am not a Hammers fan but have supported Leeds for 30 odd years. I didn't slag you off because of your nationality, I slagged your opinion off, not you personally. It pays not to be too sensitive on this blog, earlier on some neophyte called (01.09) requested that I "kill myself" By the way I used to swim in the canal when I was a lad!
