Has McDermott signed duds for Leeds?

There was a great deal of excitement when Friar Brian was appointed, and he still has a reservoir of good will to call upon - not least because he replaced Old Big Gob - but questions are beginning to be asked about his transfer dealings.

First off, his decision not to recruit loan signings ahead of the crucial Derby game, because of the imminent two week international break, seems like short termism of the very worst form. So what that two weeks' wages will be wasted, surely what matters is for any new recruits to be given time to "bed down" in the Leeds squad. You don't want to bring somebody in on a Thursday and pitch him into the starting 11 on the Saturday, so the break is actually a reason to sign now, rather than later. Unless money is absurdly tight.

Then there are the question marks over the players he has brought in. Murphy was dropped for the win over Bournemouth, and so was Wootton. Smith didn't start and Complete Hunt is still goalless - although to be fair, he did win the penalty against the Cherries.

With money tight, it had to be used wisely in the summer, and the evidence suggests that Friar Brian has frittered it rather than invested it. Maybe, just maybe, his signings could be justified by the "building for the future" argument, but does anybody really believe that messers Wootton, Murphy and Smith have a future in the Prem? It's stretching credibility if we are honest, isn't it?

So, the jury is out on Friar Brian and his band of merry men. Another reverse at Derby will increase the anxiety because Leeds won't have the advantage of an extra man too many times this season, and against eleven, the team has struggled of late.

McDermott was recruited to make a difference, but thus far, results have been no better than under Warnock and his recruits have done little to improve the squad. It is not the start Leeds fans were hoping for!

  1. Well you've definitely been thinking about 'stuff' in your dreams and possibly not lost the plot as I previously suggested you may. Don't stir too deeply, you may upset yourself.

  5. I agree that signing before the international break makes more sense and is more beneficial for team building.
I would get rid of Hunt and Smith now, keep Wooton and Murphy, play Poleon and Mowatt regularly...I think 5-2 for the draw tomorrow is reasonable.

  6. I would rather have 4 duds that have amounted to 1mil spent plus wages, than a 15mil donkey who will be injured most of the season. But that just me.

And it makes perfect sense to delay signing anyone, seeing as BMD wants loand to buys, which would give continuity and not just a short sighted solution. But again thats just me.

And you are still a prat!

  12. I think you have been fair in your last few pieces of writing.
However I know for a fact that Luke Murphy is a fantastic player and one who was in demand and we did well to get- as yet he hasn't gelled into the play-maker we were expecting him to be - but I'm hopeful this is just because he is getting used to the step up in quality and the physical nature of the championship.

  17. I can only presume cockney boy, that mcdermott was promised more cash, after he bought murphy.why else would he buy another midfield player.its obvious where our problems lie.the jury is still out on useless hunt, and the other 3.just wish,we would show more ambition in the transfer market.it seems to me that gfh want to get to the prem on the cheap.another defeat against our bogey team derby, and it will be along 2 wks to wait for our next game.come on leeds.we r taking over 4ooo fans tomoror.mske us proud.

  29. Wootton isn't a signing but a youth product, but don't let the trifling issue of accuracy get in the way of your pathetic attempts to incite hatred - now get a life and concentrate on getting the facts right in writing about your own team.

  33. Surprised at wootton being dropped, he's done ok. I mentioned Murphy on your last post. We bought him cos prem clubs were allegedly sniffing around him and the board were looking at a big mark up on him next summer.... carries on like he's started and we will have to give him away. It's a long old season so we wont panic yet but our new owners do appear to be a set of clueless wankers. I hope I'm wrong. M.o.t.

  34. What a load of rubbish! BMcD will be our best Manager since Revie. Hunt will come good. Murphy and Wootton will learn both in the team and on the training pitch. Brian bought them in but he has the character to drop them to the bench if they are not performing well enough. Yes we all want a win at Derby but frankly as long as we are thereabouts by Christmas we can go up this season.

    1. Better than Wilkinson? And where is your evidence for that? Shameful disrespect for a guy that led you to the title!

  35. Do a bit of research into McD's win percentage. Significantly better than Warnocks.

All genuine Leeds fans understand that our entire squad costs about the same as Forest want to throw at Sako from Wolves and that this season is all about building a team and for the future.

We've had 8 years of short termism. We're quite happy with mid to long termism thank you.

  36. I suggest that you do a little research before posting such tripe. McD's win percentage is significantly better than Warnocks.

All genuine Leeds fans understand that it will be difficult to compete this season. We've just had 8 years of short termism thank you. Mid to long termism is much better.

  37. Isn't that a question you should be asking of Fat Sam! Seeing as we're in a better position in our league than your lot are in yours?

  38. Has West Ham signed Duds? How many players can we buy and then not use when we're back in the premiership?! haha, whatever hammer head!

  39. This team with the resources they have, need a manager who can search for international talent.
