Poland robbed by absence of Leeds centre back

So England have done it, qualifying for the World Cup in Brazil with a nail biting victory over Poland. No matter that the clown Szczesny played like Jan Tomaszewski, England were too strong going forward and were water tight at the back. Even Joe Hart couldn't throw this one away!

Polish fans with long enough memories will be rueing the failure of Woy Hodgson to select a Leeds man at the heart of the defence. If only, if only, there was a Norman Hunter to stand on the ball on the touch line, thereby allowing Poland to break away and score.

Mind you, the Poles can't blame Woy. Who in the present Leeds squad could get anywhere near an England team? Well actually that's unfair, half a dozen probably qualify for the Vets team!

Meanwhile, Woy has achieved what the so called "great" Don Revie couldn't achieve. He has guided the England team through to the finals of a major international tournament.

And a decent looking team is suddenly emerging. Whisper it quietly, but if Hart can recover his form, we might do rather well. Assuming Gerrard isn't tempted into a jewellery heist of course!

  1. How many west ham players can?

  2. Hunter took full responsibility for the mistake. However if you watch the replay you'll find that he, a left footed player, was having to cover for both the right back and the right midfield, both of whom had gone missing. Oh, and where was the West Ham player in the squad ??

  19. Sam Byram is without doubt the best right-back England have to offer! Tom Lees will be in the future and then Alex Mowatt is a future centre mid. That's three more than West Spam!

  21. You have got just what you wanted here a few bites.

But Hunter won more championships & medals than any play at West Ham EVER has (@ West Ham).

He appeared in European finals, cup finals & was an excellent player, as incidently were Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst et all. I am not willing to be goaded into inter club stupidity by you. I generally like West Ham but you are not a good example of the fans

  29. Sorry but I find your attack on people with speach impediments disgusting. These people have to tackle day to day issues such as a simple conversation without the simplicity of the average person. Get a grip!

  30. Ummmm, actually Townsend was playing for Leeds not all that long ago.

And Milner is one of the many successful Academy graduates (also played a fair few games for the first team).

  31. Sometimes, though I'm reluctant to admit it, your articles are mildly amusing. This one is just a desperate attempt at baiting, infantile and peurile. Time to hide your publication from appearing in newsnow I think.

  32. Oh yes I remember the 1973-74 season Leeds were CHAMPIONS AGAIN !, with the rather marvellous Norman Hunter in defence.

  34. A genuine question this, would appreciate a reply, Q-How do you feel when you read all the hate directed at you? Do you find it funny and fuels you to wind-up even more?

  35. HA HA love it, our players can't even get in scotland squad either, well one called up just to make numbers up as they were short of strikers so our make shift winger mccormack got called up, however he was left on bench again, perhaps after the rues of snodgrass, since leaving leeds he has started for scotland virtually all time, mccormack knows what to do request a transfer to maybe norwich who we are a feeder club for, there he might get to play in position properly and get noticed but sadly he won't as he is back to his couldn't hit a barn door form one good season and now back to this should of cashed in on him, we wouldn't even get a player in macedonia team but kenny may as well being in goal for them last night to warm him up for conceding against birmingham

  36. For heaven's sake lighten up! It was a long time ago and there were strong parallels with that infamous game, not least the performance of the Polish keeper. I hated Leeds back then, and I hated Hunter. But I was cheering on Clarke, Hunter and, possibly Cooper if he played. It didn't matter that they were Leeds, they were England! Of course, Hunter replacing Moore tested my loyalty but the Three Lions always mattered more than the crossed Hammers.

But Hunter let the nation down. His mistake was horrific and inexcusable. Yes Shilton was at fault too, but Hunter allowed the attack in the first place.

However, it was so long ago that the anger is pathetic. Grow up and learn to laugh at yourselves. Let's face it, the rest of the country is laughing at you so why not join in?
