QPR's capture of Phillips is scary news for Nottingham Forest, Wigan, Watford, Leeds, Leicester and all the other promotion wannabes

It's increasingly looking as if only one automatic promotion place is up for grabs this season because, on the eve of Financial Fair Play, QPR are going shit or bust on pocket jacks.

Redknapp has made some sensible signings, has retained the core of a decent Championship team and now, in the form of Phillips, has added a genuine ace to the pack.

This boy is good. He's quick, skilful and is unquestionably one of the better players in the division. Johnson, Austin and Zamora will thrive on his crosses, if they can stay fit, and it will now take one unholy cock up, or a dreadful plague of injuries, to stop QPR bouncing straight back into the Prem.

I was no fan of Fernandes in the Prem because he was chucking his money around as if QPR had a right to sit at the very top table, but buying total mediocrity. The gRRRs couldn't see it, of course, and like Leeds fans under Warnock, hailed the arrival of every journeyman signing as if he was Gareth Bale. And Rangers got what they deserved, a bloody nose.

But full marks to the QPR Board now. It may blow up in their faces, but when there is a huge pot on the table and you have a pretty decent hand, you have to play it for all its worth. Whilst clubs like Leicester and Leeds use FFP as an excuse for penny pinching and navel gazing, Fernandes has said, "Bollocks, let's get out of this pox arse division before the penalties cut in." And all credit to him.

The fans of other teams will chunter away about the need for a level playing field but clubs like Leeds enjoy much bigger gates than QPR and with more visionary leadership, could be sending out a similar message. McDermott has said he wants a winger, and would no doubt have given his right arm to sign Phillips. But despite history, Leeds are now a financial minnow alongside the rainbow trout that is QPR.

So Forest, Wigan, Watford, Leicester, Leeds and co are all now competing for one place, or a ticket to the misery that is the play offs.

  1. Wow, one player can guarantee automatic promotion! What happens if he gets injured? Are QPR back in the playoff pack? Or what if he loses form or doesn't settle? Phillips didn't even have that good a season last year compared to the year before and yet he can single handedly get you a top two spot? Must be some player and given the money involved in reaching the Premier League, he must be valued close to Gareth Bale! Or is he just a better than average Championship player?

  2. Oh dear, some winding up is going on here and no doubt the Leeds lot will bite. Doesnt matter how much is true about it though, they wont see the point being made lol

  3. speculate to accumulate springs to mind, come on GFH show McD some respect and give him the money to buy the man he wants, just take a look at what he has done already for the team, let's ram success down that old parasitic tosser Bate's throat and tell him "LET'S SEE WHAT YOU COULD HAVE WON" imagine getting promotion the first year he's out of the door.
It's bloody annoying, but for the sake of a few million we could have made the promised land a couple of years back.

  5. Why don't you add the other 90 odd football league teams to the title mate. You have then got the ideal type of heading for all of your blogs! Oh and hurry up and die Neville!

  10. Funny I dont remember Leeds fans celebrating the arrival of Warnocks players........they understood what class they were. Bates left a club with debts due to his poor running of it and GFH have had to inject up to 10 million to keep it afloat....GFH are skint but they are trying to do the right things

  11. So what if QPR are spending loads, money doesn't always buy success, Just look at Leicester and how much they spent previous seasons.... I hope as you put it "it may blow up in there faces.

    1. I agree with you, money doesn't always buy success. Just look at how crap we were (Q.P.R) last season. Yes it may well blow up in our faces, if it does, then hey that's life. We have no divine right to go straight back up to the premier league, if we do, we do. I wouldn't disrespect the other teams in the Championship and suggest we will. As all of us supporters of Championship teams know, it is a very tough league to get promotion from. Good luck to all of the teams in the Championship. There will be a lot of ups and downs between now and the end of the season.

  17. If they had signed Ince I would be worried. QPR for all there quality were very poor yesterday.

Should be taking advantage of Boltons piir start to the season.

Lets see where things are at after 10-12 games.

IMHO - Once harry is gone and mclaren takes over it'll all go tits up.

    1. QPR battered bolton yesterday, all over them. Automatic promotion is guaranteed, Philips is as good as Bale on his day

    2. QPR got the 3 points even thought they did play well. That's the mark of champions.

Phillips is quality no doubt about it, they'll probably sign another couple of players before the window shuts. Not doing badly when you consider 18 players left and only signed 6. Seem to have togetherness and a team spirit which was clearly lacking before.

FFP should have been slowly brought in so clubs could adjust not have it thrust on them. The three sides that came down QPR Wigan and Reading should all go back to the prem having the advantage of the prem payments ie they dint have to sell and can buy anybody they want.If these three sides dont go back up at the first time of asking i can see them doing a Wolves and drop out of the championship. But saying that the champinship is an evil league the bigger you are the harder you fall everybody else in the division will be busting a gut to see these sides fail, the championship is the hardest league in the world to get out off and in fact stay in .So welcome QPR, Wigan and Reading but be warned your their for every other team in this league to shoot you down get ready cos every game is going to be a cup final question is are you up for it,let the battle commence!!!!

  22. It's amazing that someone takes the time to write an article to entertain and voice an opinion, their own opinion! We don't have to agree you know.........and I'm a QPR supporter who has had to endure Mark Hughes at his best but come on guys it seems like 'give an idiot a computer' and see what happens, have some respect and get a life. Look in the mirror (if you have one) and ask yourself if you're proud to be English and write utter nonsense.......really!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Except, this is he Championship, where money doesn't guarantee success. I watched some of the QPR game. I thought Barton played well but I think he'd rather be elsewhere. It's far too early to start making predictions. Your very own West Ham out spent every other team in the league and were very lucky to sneak up via the play offs despite being in the top two for 2/3 of the season.

I think we'll all be a lot wiser after the half way point has been passed. I predict the league will be even closer than last year.

On the plus side this is going to make the Championship very interesting. On the negative side it means you spending more time commenting on the likes of Leeds and QPR because he Premiership (outside the top 6) is so dreary for a West Ham fan like yourself. The long ball game is OK if there is a clear objective but when used as a survival mechanism it's just plain boring.

  30. To those who are saying it is just one player, you are missing the point entirely. QPR have signed six or seven and Phillips is the icing on the cake. I thought Austin was a damn good signing as well. There was a rump of a good Championship team and that rump has been built upon and enhanced. Of course it can go wrong, I say as much in the article, but QPR look nailed on as things stand. Last season there were no stand out teams.

    1. you miss the point entirely. qpr spent more cash than anyone to avoid relegation last term and still went down. FACT. If I ever met you face to face? I would knock you out. FACT. not due to the fact that every day, you slate my club? no. just due to the fact that you are a jumped up prick who thinks he has the right to judge people (be it through race, sexuality or whatever reason you think you are better than anyone else) why don't you face it? your a lonely excuse for a man who gets off on other peoples worries and ill fates? I bet you laugh at the homeless and the disabled? that's the kind of guy you are isn't it? you are nothing more than a Troll but with a unique difference. We all wish YOU WOULD FUCK OFF AND DIE.

  31. How have you managed to make this article about Leeds, again? I can hardly believe that you were capable of making the news that QPR have signed a player into an article that has a go at Leeds.

I suppose it took you a while to conjure this one so well done!

  34. What a bizare posting. So the rest of the Championship should suddenly be 'scared' because QPR sign a decent Championship player ? How so ? I mean, it's Phillips they've signed, not Rooney or Aguero....

QPR have a decent squad from a Championship perspective, but the addition of Phillips is unlikely to make much of a difference overall. QPR should be in the mix, but they're one of many, and I don't see their rivals losing much sleep over this signing.

  35. Even in this article, your secret love affair with Leeds comes shining through Neville. Talking of QPR - they have to go up, otherwise they will be in a lot of trouble. They are throwing money around like confetti and that is unsustainable (- remember Leeds under Ridsdale and Portsmouth under Mandaric). This will ultimately be to the detriment of a team like QPR with such a small following.
