Leeds United's Owners Prove Sceptics Wrong

Well there's a turn up for the books. Leeds were rumoured to be trying to sign Scott Wootton on loan but instead have landed the Champions League defender on a three year deal. And there we were thinking GFH Capital were in the game of asset stripping.

If we ignore the fact that Wootton featured in a 5-4 defeat against Chelsea, conceding a penalty into the bargain, this looks like an exciting signing - for the future. And thinking about it, conceding five against Chelsea in the Cup is something Leeds know all about!

However, given Leeds are playing in the here and now, this seems a slightly odd signing. Leeds already have the highly promising Lees and Sam Byram in the back four, so do they really need a promising kid low on first team experience?

Manchester United clearly don't fancy the boy, otherwise a loan deal would have suited them better; and the Mancs don't make many mistakes when they let players go - albeit West Ham are hoping they have captured an unpolished gem in the form of Ravel Morrison.

And talking West Ham, what do the Hammers and promoted Hull City have in common? Answer, one Abdoulaye Faye, who was at the heart of the defence when both clubs were promoted from the Championship. Faye is now 35 years old so was 33 when promoted with West Ham and 34 last season with Hull. Now Leeds are chock full of old codgers as we know, but there are two positions perfectly suited to a gnarled old pro - goal keeper and centre half.

It's true that Warnock is no spring chicken, but he will have his work cut out marshalling a defence with three promising kids in it. Old Big Gob slammed Lees after a "schoolboy" error last season, and was only marginally more forgiving when Byram made a big boob. The Reverend McDermott may be a little more forgiving, but it is hard to imagine a defence full of choir boys succeeding in the rough and tumble Championship.

But hang on, what am I saying? Who says Wootton has been signed to play alongside Lees and Byram? Maybe one is about to leave!

You're talking about Capital One Cup game. He didn't start a single one Premier League game for Manchester United.

  18. What is it about Leeds that makes fans of West Ham pour over their laptops waiting to pounce on any Leeds related news. So angst ridden and desperate are these sad souls that they strain every sinew to put a desperate sounding negative spin on even the smallest tit bit of Leeds news. Being a Hammer fan must be soooooo boring. Or maybe it's just one really relally sad loser who doesn't get out much.

  28. Leeds know how to concede. They let 7 in against West Ham quite a few years ago in the Cup.
As far as Man Utd and Leeds transfer activity go I'd like to point something out. They sold Giles to us. They sold Strachan to us. Hopefully Wooton will bring the omens.
Sharp and B Greenhoff were a bit duff.
Leeds have sold high to Man Utd.
    Smith, Rio,Jordan,McQueen.
The biggest error was Eric. I was gutted when they sold him. I rang up my Man Utd friend and said you've just bought Eric Cantana and he answered 'Eric who?' Just goes to show how the fans can be a bit blinkered.

Yes you are correct about the wages with Macca.

I think after this Wooton signing then the Mcormack sale is inevitable.....with Dawson taking over Macca's role.
It's not bad business with Macca now 27..Leeds getting a reasonable defender plus some free change.
I think EHD should be sold asap.

    1. You know many Scum fans? Have things become so desperate that the citizens of Leeds have taken to supporting Man Utd?

I know many West Ham fans who hailed Sears as the next Tony Cottee - he is now at Colchester. Fans tend not to be the best judges!

I say he may be a good player for the future, but ask yourself the question, if he has oodles of potential, why did the Mancs let him go and why didn't clubs like Norwich, Cardiff and Hull sign him? You know, clubs bigger than Leeds!

    2. Cos he wanted to play for the same Team you are obsessed with HF. Same reason you don't blog about 'bigger ' teams like Norwich Cardiff and Hull, no one would be responding.

  35. Well, 5pts from 3 games averages out over the season to 76.66 pts.

This has always been enough for a top 6 finish.....

and 9 pts in 5 games = 83 points (top two!!)

    ReplyDelete

    1. Good stat Jack. Here's another one:

Leeds have scored 3 goals in 3 games, two of which were at home. That averages out as 46 goals over a 46 game season. The three relegated clubs last season, from bottom upwards, scored 59, 55 and 60 respectively. The top six, working downwards, scored 72, 61, 85, 69, 73 and 71.

Leeds scored just 57 last season and that is why Leeds finished outside the top 12. If you don't score, you don't win games!

So tell me, why has McDermott prioritised a centre back. Rhyming slang "striker" Noel Hunt has never been prolific and Alas Smith is no Mick Jones. You need to replace Becchio! Everybody seems to know that except Reverend McDermott and the Leeds Board. Hang on though, effective strikers cost money!

      Delete
    2. You don't understand the basics of a reasoned, valid statistical arguement do you bed room boy?

For greatest accuracy, take all the games that McDermott has presided over and multiply the points tally accrued by the number of games in a season and divide by the games played under McDermott. Simple, my 10 year old could do it. Troll on HF.

      Delete
    3. It's a mathematical law that a team that acquires more than 76pts cannot fail to qualify for the playoffs.

and reflect that the mathematical maximum number of pts over a season in the championship is 1656 (i.e. 46x36)

and the mathematical minimum number is 1104 (46x24)

"every team that draws then another team draws too!"
5pts every 3 matches is enough!

    4. top scorer for west ham last season? Nolan. 7 goals until a hat trick on the last day equals 10. you haven't mentioned that "statistic" ever have you?

  39. What is depressing?

Is it the fact that my fellow Leeds fans continue to respond to your bile?

Is it that you used to say that you only wrote about a 'second club' for one season and then switched? And have subsequently decided to continue thrusting your antagonizing needles about all things Leeds for a second term?

Or is it that your life must be so empty that you need to engage with fellow human beings through a screen and keyboard. Something tells me you wont be the noisy Hammers fan at the bar who is popular and vivacious on match day. I bet you are one of those that sneaks through the gate with his solitary friend and midway through the second half has a very quiet sing somewhere near the front of a family friendly stand. But its ok when the scythe of death comes thrashing through the door you can always remember these moments of human interaction. The non-physical, lonely and pathetic ones you pulled from fellow human beings with jabs and jibes. Remember we will never meet or engage again but I bet it makes you feel whole that somebody bothered with one of your sadly weakening opinions.

What happens when my fellow Leeds chums give up on bothering to look at one of your articles on newsnow or they switch off the search for your gaunt humour? Well then you will probably pick another club but something tells me you will feel a little less happy inside. Millwall don't have the fan base, Chelsea don't know how to turn on a Mac, Manchester United - well their fans are probably your neighbours and you would not want to upset the neighbours - your mum will not make you fish fingers for your dinner.

The thing that is most deplorable is that Leeds fans are known to react quickly to incitement and so all you are doing is digging at an open wound. There is nothing smart or bold in that it is weak and easy. So please do something difficult, challenge yourself - climb a mountain or move out of your parents house or talk to a real person this week using your mouth.
