Middlesbrough's Mowbray Threatens Leeds in Pursuit of McCormack

Well, it wasn't subtle! Tony Nobody has put a gun to the temple of GFH Capital and threatened to pull the trigger, by warning that Boro may look elsewhere if the Arabs aren't careful. Anybody who thinks he has given up in his pursuit of McCormack is very much mistaken, and anybody who thinks that Leeds have slammed the door shut on a possible deal is blithely misguided.

Why haven't Boro signed Becchio? Because they want McCormack. Why are Boro expressing an interest in the former Leeds top scorer? To show Leeds that they have other irons in the fire and are not over a barrel, desperate to sign the Scot. Why are Boro still sniffing around? Because nobody at Leeds has categorically stated that Ross isn't for sale.

Yes Leeds have rejected three bids, but it seems that the highest figure offered thus far is £1.5m. Now, given his form so far this season, and the fact that he has been recalled to the Scotland squad, that obviously isn't enough. GFH are committed to getting "value" for their assets, they don't want to give them away.

And frustratingly for the Arab Bank Built on Sand, only Boro have bid so far. What's needed is for another club to up the ante. The trouble is, QPR apart, all the clubs in the Championship have one eye on Financial Fair Play, and none of the teams in the Prem - not even Norwich City - seem to rate McCormack's prospects of doing the business in the top division. So Leeds are playing brinkmanship, trying to hold out for £2m in a buyer's market and Boro are biding their time, seemingly confident that the Leeds Board will cave in sooner or later.

How else can you explain Mowbray's latest comments: “The conversations continue... It will only intensify as next week starts to run away and September 2 looms...they will know that offer will be off the table when time runs out and they either need the money or they don’t...if one deal comes in that we like we will just forget and never go back...That’s not a veiled threat, it’s reality and I’m sure they know that."

Now, whether or not GFH respond to this threat remains to be seen. In fact, the result today could be a factor. If Leeds win, and a promotion push looks a genuine possibility, then it would be financial madness to part with McCormack; but should Leeds lose, and GFH calculate that in all probability, the club faces another season in the Championship, then £1.75m may be too tempting.

Leeds fans should not be counting their camels yet!

  1. or..... the leeds board don't want to sell at all because we are building a team. A good writer shows a balanced debate, or at least acknowledges the other opinions. This is just lazy writing for dramatic effect

Your articles are so biased its untrue !

  3. I concur with all of the above, I have stated all along that Leeds will sell him, if the bid nears £2M.

As HF states; todays match result will have a huge bearing on the outcome..

  4. Go away and get a life, and talk about your own team.

  5. Several things. Apparently Middlesbrough have made a fourth bid. Leeds are officially in contract extension talks with McCormack, which even if they come to nothing; he still has 2 years if his current deal to run.

They do not need to sell for a sub-value fee.

Also, I would find it very unlikely, given McDermott's public comments, that McCormack would be included in today's squad against Ipswich if he was going to walk away. I doubt McDermott would pick him, and neither would Leeds want him injured if they were going to cash in.

What are your odds on him leaving and staying?

  7. Lets not forget, Leeds are only expected to get 1 point over the next 2 games, according to the bookies.
They are also a shorter price to get relegated than win the Championship. Take comfort, you're alone.

  12. Can I ask you to honestly answer a question. In not going to hurl a volley of abuse at you but respectfully ask why a West Ham supporter would write the vast majority of their articles about Leeds United? What's it all about? Please please explain. I know the Leeds fans who comment have their view but I would rather hear it from the horses mouth

  14. Utter garbage Neville. What if we actually don't need to sell McCormack - that would really piss on your bonfire. Your desperately hoping that we sell, so you can jump back on the 'Leeds are skint' bandwagon.

  15. You can't decide whether you're going up or staying down after just 4 games, especially in this league

  27. Why Don't you concentrate on you own team?

    ReplyDelete
  28. You just concentrate on your excuses for your away defeat at St. James' this afternoon Southern Troll, there's no deal for Ross going down with Middleshite, it's over, move on you're embarrassing yourself yet again.

  29. The usual bile and invective. But nobody has yet explained why Haigh or Patel or the new chairman haven't simply come out and said that McCormack isn't for sale. Why do Boro keep going back with offers? Why haven't they signed Becchio who is available? Why is Tony Nobody wasting his breath still talking about a possible deal?

I'm not saying McCormack will be sold. What I am suggesting is that GFH Capital have not said definitely no. Which means he may yet go.

  31. The guy is right in what he says, wham fan or not.
I dont know why he feels the need to comment on Leeds, maybe the fact we all reply gives him the oxygen he craves. Only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about (like the Hammers).

  32. Signed, sealed and a new contract fuck off boro super mac to score again today 😁

  33. calm down..this is normal..Leeds have said he is not for sale but Boro have the right to carry on if they want..don't panic this is normal in this game when someone want someone, they don't always give up till they get a replacement..But your wrong to say Leeds haven't said he is not for sale..they have..but what more they can do? stop panic..

  34. What you are showing is your pathetically desperate desire that McCormack should be sold, or that anything should happen to the detriment of Leeds United. It's blindingly obvious that you feel this way, what's not clear is why - and why you continue to wax obsessed with Leeds on what is ostensibly a West Ham blog. Hence the puzzlement evident among those who try to get you to reveal what motivates you - many of us feel you must have had a slap off a Leeds fan at some point, and this is what produces such endless streams of schoolgirly spite.

Incidentally, "blithely misguided" must be one of the clumsiest and most meaningless constructions I've ever read - shockingly poor even for such a cack-handed "writer" as you. Perhaps you need a session on the shrink's couch AND some basic writing tuition.

  35. Leeds should not even be answering the phone for anything less than £3 million based on the ridiculous prices for other players. Leeds would not have time or money to replace McCormack adequately. Why is there an assumption that Leeds are encouraging further bids? the only noises coming out of Leeds are that they do not want to sell and are in discussions for a contract extension. I know you are just wanting to wind people up but McCormack and Leeds United are both better off staying where they are. Middlesbrough should pursue elsewhere, can you honestly see their prospects are any better than Leeds anyway.

    1. Great afternoon so far, Leeds won as I predicted (although I git the score wrong) and West Ham picked up an away point in the Prem.

  37. Let's be honest, mcormack is for sale, as is every player. The old cliché that every player has a price and all that.
What boro need to understand is that he's simply not for sale at the derisory bids they've made.

Ross is clearly angling for another pay rise, and I firmly believe of he can get an extra couple of k's a week at the awful club that is mfc, he will reject the contract offer from Leeds and will be sold for some 2-2.5m
