Referee should lead players from pitch if Leeds fans abuse Dave Jones again

After the ugly events in the reverse fixture at Hillsborough, a stand must be taken in the name of decency. I get sick to death of the way the word pedophile is used as a term of abuse, with no consideration of whether or not it is appropriate, and in the case of Dave Jones the guy was not prosecuted following investigation.

Now Jimmy Savile managed to wriggle out of justice by dying before the long arm of the law eventually pulled itself out of its pocket, but Jones has suffered the reverse, a wrongful accusation which must have caused him huge mental and emotional hurt. The fact that he stayed in the game speaks volumes for his passion for football and for his integrity. He will be subject to regular CRB checks because of his contact with children through the youth team at Wednesday  so he is probably "cleaner" than most in terms of proof of innocence.

The abuse he suffered from Leeds fans was utterly unacceptable therefore, and the Board of Leeds, along with the police and F.A., should be making it crystal clear that a repeat will not be tolerated. If the foul abuse goes up again, the players should be led from the pitch and sections of the ground cleared if necessary. If that results in trouble, Leeds should be deducted the points.

And before anybody cries foul, I believe the same should happen when West Ham play Spurs. Should the hissing or Nazi salutes go up, the players should leave the pitch and that section of the ground should be cleared. If that presents problems, West Ham should be deducted the points.

And the difference with Newcastle against Sunderland? Sadly Il Duce Di Canio did give that Nazi salute and has got that tattoo. If Newcastle fans straight arm salute him, it will not be in support of Fascism but in protest at his appointment. And as much as the gesture revolts me, I think it would be justified if aimed only at Di Canio. He saw no problems with the salute to racist Lazio Ultras, so what's the problem in showing him the mirror image?

  1. No mention of Wednesday fans singing about Istanbul all match in the first fixture?

  2. So, by your 'logic' the game should be stopped should Mr Jones be made to feel uncomfortable!! I have supported Leeds for over 40 years, and found Jones' comments disgusting, comments for which he has never apologised, and I wonder why he was never charged. Is it ok for the manager to label fans whatever he wants? He should have been banned, however it is seen by people like your self to be justified. Jones has made his bed, now he must lay in it.

  5. While I agree with your underlying point, Dave Jones shouldn't have to put up with accusations of being a paedophile, I think you are presenting a very biased view and missing a lot of context for what is likely to happen tomorrow.

Dave Jones has had to put up with that, wrongly, from a hell of a lot of fans, not just Leeds fans (and I'd be willing to bet that he faced it from Sheff Wed fans long before he became their manager). But Dave felt the need at the end of the reverse fixture to lay the blame exclusively at the feet of Leeds 'vile animals' and went further to be clear that he was branding ALL leeds fans as such. He chose to do so when given the opportunity of questions about a moment of stupidity on live TV by one fan (who has since been dealt with) and while making the whole thing about Dave Jones and hardly at all about Kirkland.

There is absolutely no doubt about it, Dave Jones is in for a rough afternoon and for once he deserves it, so long as it stops short of paedophile accusations - not that I can confidently say that will be the case.

P.S. Performing the Nazi salute is actually a criminal offence in some countries (although not England), so while you might say Di Canio is fair game, the salute would surely not be a justified way to protest. Its also worth noting that such 'protests' from Newcasl fans would not be aimed a Di Canio, but as abuse/banter (delete as appropriate for your own level of tolerance) against Sunderland.

    1. I think his 2nd point about saville blows his 1st point out of the water. Saville was never proven to be a pedophile so according to our bubble blowing friend it would be wrong to call him one. Joned however hasn't been proven not to be a pedophile so its not technically wrong to call him one.

  7. Half a story (again). You conveniently forget what Jones said about ALL LEEDS FANS, following the one idiot who ran onto the pitch at Hillsborough. Just what sanctions should be aimed at him pray tell?

  8. So please tell me what song your lovely west ham fans sang against tottenham..... I believe it went along the lines of "Hitlers coming for you". Shut up and do some real work you pony

  9. Best put your tin hat on with this one!

But with such a one sided appraisal of the situation quite clearly designed to bait the Leeds fans and increase your blog traffic, that is what you are after isn't it? Oh no, I've just taken the bait........

Oh well, errrr perhaps you want me to get all upset and call you a name too. COCK. Darn, you are just too clever for my tiny mind.

  12. And I suppose the same should apply when the Wendies start banging on about Istanbul should it? No of course not....because big bad Leeds had it coming I suppose, after being such big bullies over the years? I imagine us being mocked for losing two innocent fans is banter?? Try getting to a game my friend, as opposed to sitting and reading about them from your armchair. As much as you like to bang on about how vile and disgraceful us Leeds fans are, and how disgusting Hilsborough was, your precious West Ham aren't exactly innocent are they? Now I agree what happened there was awful, especially Chris Kirkland, but had you been there (as i was) you'd have realised it wasn't exactly one way traffic. Perhaps if you got off your gold plated pedastal every now and again, and took a proper look at things, you could find something sensible, and maybe even contructive to say?

  13. (*In June 1999 Jones was formally questioned by police over alleged sexual abuse at St George's School in Formby, Merseyside, a home for children with educational and behavioural problems, where he had been employed as a care worker from 1986 to 1990.

After voluntarily attending the police station, he was arrested then questioned, before being released on bail without charge.

He was subsequently charged on 27 September with nine offences against young boys of indecent assault and child cruelty. He denied all the allegations and stated he was "confident that innocence will be established in due course". He appeared before Merseyside Magistrates Court on 2 November 1999 where he formally pleaded not guilty to all charges and was granted bail.

The case reached Liverpool Crown Court in December 2000, by which time Jones had parted company withSouthampton. He stood trial on an eventual 21 charges, which was swiftly reduced to 14 after two other alleged victims pulled out of proceedings on the eve of the trial. After a further alleged victim declined to appear or refused to give evidence, the Judge directed the jury during the fourth day of proceedings to return a formal not guilty verdict on four charges relating to the absent party. After decreeing a retrial would not be "just" on the remaining charges, the Judge recorded not guilty verdicts on the remaining 10 charges. Jones left cleared of all allegations and was told by the Judge: "No wrongdoing whatsoever on your part has been established".)

A large number of the Leeds fans housed in the Leppings Lane End sang about the child abuse charged which were dropped against Jones in, while former broadcaster Sir Jimmy Savile, now the subject of a similar police investigation, seemed to be heralded in song.

The Wednesday fans also stoked things up with songs about the two Leeds fans killed in Turkey in April 2000, with the Leeds supporters responding by throwing bottles onto the field and clashing with police.

Dave Jones: "They are vile animals.

"You talk about racism, the chanting, that's a form of racism. And then (for the Leeds players) to go and wave at them... not in my book. You don't wave at them after that.

"I thought it had gone out of our game. The authorities have to look at it and sort it. I'm talking about an incident when we should be talking about the football. We're talking about vile animals. That's what they are. We talk about racism, but that, we need to sort that.

"It wasn't just one chanting. That was from their area too. I've had it for 12 years. It's just upsetting that they're allowed to do it. They should be banned from every away ground,

  14. Some valid points and for once quite balanced, but how far do you take it ??

For example what action do you recommend when the Sheff fans start chanting about the death of 2 leeds fans in Galatasary (wwhich af course Jones convenintly didn't hear so as not to call his own fans vile animals as well) ????

  16. OK, I'm biting. How ironic that a blogger on a site called "The Games Gone Crazy" is suggesting one of the craziest things I've heard for ages that would truly ruin the game! Where do you draw the line, should Diouf lead the Leeds players off when he gets taunted by opposition fans.

  20. Have you been taking writing tips off Ollie Holt? What a delusional, moronic ramble this is. Stop every game the moment an offensive chant is heard. Excellent! If say, Leeds chant about Dave Jones, but Wednesday fans chant about Istanbul, who is at fault? Who should the FA throw the book at and dock 10-15 points off? Whoever complains the most of course.

You are a spineless, hypocritical, tolerance-romantic. With an attitude like yours, shouldn't you be working for the FA?

  21. Well if the ref takes the players off at one all we wont conceed in the last seconds again. Unfortunatley for you my friend we are leeds the most talked about team in the world cos we are interesting and we will fight to the end of the game. We will shout, call and upset cos been popular means hated.

  22. I haven't read the article and really can't be arsed debating it tbh. We all know who the real villain was that night (apart from the idiot who assaulted Kirland, of course).

I wouldn't waste your time bringing up the Istanbul chants lads as HF has already made it clear the level of respect he has for Loftus and Speight (see earlier post).

I just wanted to say let's wait until were 3 0 up with 20 minutes to go before we start hurling abuse at Dave Jones tomorrow. REMEMBER, THESE CHANTS SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TOP DO WITH THE CHILD ABUSE CLAIMS AS HE WAS PROVEN INNOCENT. Let's just concentrate on the fact he's a spineless little scumbag as this is more than sufficient.

We have a real chance of going down this year so need to focus 99% of our chants towards the team. Funtime can wait until after were cruising.

Christopher Loftus & Kevin Speight RIP

  23. i feel sorry for Jones being on the end of that assuming of course he is innocent but if you don't make any effort to not look like a pd when you do look quite a bit like one, Michael Groves springs to mind, people will talk, as for labelling the entire support vile animals, extremely unwise if you don't want a bucket load more of the same type of abuse from people who may not have said anything in the first instance.

  29. Took me a while to figure out if you were being serious. Not so straight forward as that - there is absolutely no place in football for racism or fascism in my book, but to haul off the players every time somebody makes a derogatory/ unsubstantiated comment is delusional at best - think of the Fergie time?

Dave Jones certainly didn't doesn't deserve to have that sort of abuse thrown at him, neither did the whole utd fanbase deserve to be branded "vile animals", he will reap the consequences tomorrow but will fight another day.

My point is ostensibly football is for fans to let their hair down once a week and bond over a common interest - there's got to be a hero and there's got to be a villain. Money has already altered players prerogatives and the landscape in which it is played. For better or for worse is a different debate. If we push to sterilise the match day experience furthermore god only knows what will remain in the future.

  31. So much to address here and much of it is reasonable, though I disagree.

This argument about banter and killing the game is thorny. I don't want to close down banter, that would close down this site. I see the justification for chanting and for piss taking, that's a feature of both football and of being British.

However, there are some things that are beyond the pale. Love him or hate him, IF, and I stress IF, Jones is absolutely innocent of the allegations then the chanting is cruel beyond impaling. He is a father and grandfather. The allegation is disgusting. He was not found guilty. If he is ever found guilty, hang him; if he is not, to accuse him of the most disgusting crime in the book, apart perhaps from cannibalism, is obscene. To call that "banter" is hideous. It's like calling a hit and run killing a traffic accident!

Now to Jones's post match comments. He was justifiably upset and outraged. Yes he used unfortunate hyperbole but he has apologised subsequently. He was wrong to call "all" Leeds fans animals, but put yourself in his position, with a relative of yours exposed to that level of abuse, and how would you react? Surely any right minded person would understand why he responded as he did?

Now to the chanting of Sheffield Wednesday fans. I'm not going to defend that - it was disgusting too - but Jones wasn't responsible. To turn the abuse on him is like beating up a sibling because his elder brother has upset you - crass and cowardly.

    I'll continue below!

    1. With respect Hammersfan no one accused Dave Jones of making those chants. What is disgusting is that he chose not to 'hear' them despite the fact they were louder and from a greater proportion of fans (and yes I was there before you ask). What is even more disgusting and one sided is you have chosen to completely disregard this.

  33. The comments about West Ham are stupid because I say the same penalties should apply to the club I support. The racism of a section of our fan base is deplorable and I have always been clear in my opposition to it. Action must be taken against the club, sadly, because until that happens the club - and I mean what ever club is involved - will put revenue first. Deduct points and the fans will think before they cross the line; deduct points and the clubs will take action against the monsters who shame the game we love.
